Vyana Vayu

Vyana Vayu is often described as the “diffusive” or “pervasive” force in the body. Its main functions include:

  • Circulating blood, nutrients, and oxygen throughout the body
  • Regulating movement of muscles and joints
  • Coordinating the nervous system (signals moving back and forth)
  • Controlling heart rhythm and pulse
  • Managing overall physical coordination and expansion/contraction

Think of it as the system that connects everything and keeps things moving everywhere, not just in one direction.

So “Vyana” literally means “that which moves or spreads in all directions” or “diffused life-force”

Its primary seat is said to be the heart, but unlike other vayus, it spreads throughout the entire body, working in all directions.

How it works

  • Prana Vayu = intake (breathing in, sensory input)
  • Apana Vayu = elimination (downward movement)
  • Vyana Vayu = distribution (moving everything where it needs to go)

Signs of balanced Vyana Vayu

  • Good circulation (warm hands/feet)
  • Steady pulse and heart function
  • Smooth, coordinated movement
  • Healthy skin tone and energy distribution

Signs of imbalance

  • Poor circulation (cold extremities, numbness)
  • Irregular heartbeat or palpitations
  • Uncoordinated movement or tremors
  • Anxiety or scattered energy

In yoga, Vyana Vayu is less about one specific technique and more about the quality of integration across your whole practice. It’s the force that connects breath, movement, and awareness into one coordinated flow.
