Agni & Tejas

Tejas

The Inner Fire of Yoga

There is a quiet fire within each of us.

In yoga and Ayurveda, this inner fire is explored through the qualities of Agni and Tejas—two beautiful and closely connected concepts that invite us to consider how we digest not only food, but also experiences, emotions, thoughts and the energy of life itself.

Agni — the fire of transformation

The Sanskrit word Agni means fire. In Ayurveda, Agni is often described as the force responsible for digestion and transformation.

On a physical level, Agni helps us digest food and transform it into energy. But its meaning extends far beyond the physical body. We are constantly taking things into ourselves—food, conversations, experiences, emotions, information and impressions—and Agni represents our ability to process and transform them.

When Agni is balanced, we may feel energised, clear and steady. When it is too weak, we might experience heaviness, sluggishness or a lack of motivation. When it becomes excessive, we can experience intensity, irritability or a feeling of being constantly driven.

Yoga gives us practices that can help us cultivate a healthy, balanced inner fire.

Tejas — the light of inner intelligence

Tejas can be understood as inner radiance, brilliance or fiery intelligence. While Agni is the transformative fire, Tejas is the subtle light that can emerge from that transformation.

Tejas is associated with clarity, discernment, confidence and the ability to see things clearly.

When we nurture our inner fire wisely, we may begin to notice a different kind of brightness—not simply physical energy, but a sense of presence and awareness.

Tejas reminds us that true vitality isn’t necessarily about doing more. Sometimes it comes from becoming clearer about what we need, what we value and what no longer serves us.

Finding the balance

The invitation of Agni is not to create as much fire as possible. It is to find the right amount of fire.

Too little fire can leave us feeling stagnant. Too much can leave us feeling depleted or burnt out.

This is a beautiful metaphor for modern life.

We can become so accustomed to being busy, productive and constantly switched on that we mistake intensity for vitality. But yoga encourages us to find a more sustainable flame—a fire that gives warmth and light without consuming us.

Our practice can therefore become an exploration of balance:

  • When do I need to kindle my fire?
  • When do I need to soften it?
  • What am I ready to transform?
  • What am I holding onto that no longer needs to be carried?

The fire within

Agni and Tejas remind us that we already carry an extraordinary capacity for transformation within us.  Life will continually give us things to digest—joy and sadness, beginnings and endings, challenges and opportunities.  We cannot always choose what arrives at our door.  But through yoga, breath and awareness, we can cultivate the ability to meet what comes with greater steadiness.  We can tend our inner fire.  Not with force.  Not with urgency.  But with care.

May your Agni burn steadily.
May your Tejas shine brightly.
And may your inner fire illuminate the path ahead.
