Prithvi – Earth Element

Finding Stability Through Yoga

Have you ever noticed how much calmer and more centred you feel after walking in nature, standing barefoot on the grass, or holding a strong, steady yoga pose? These experiences help us reconnect with Prithvi, the Earth element – one of the Pancha Maha Bhutas, or the five great elements, that form the foundation of yogic philosophy.

Prithvi represents stability, strength, nourishment, and support. It reminds us that, just like a tree needs strong roots to grow, we too need a solid foundation to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What is Prithvi?
In yoga, the Earth element symbolises everything that is solid, stable, and tangible. It is the energy that gives us structure, helping us feel grounded and connected to ourselves and the world around us.

The qualities of Prithvi include, Stability, Strength, Patience, Steadiness, Reliability, Endurance, and Nourishment. These qualities encourage us to slow down, remain present, and create balance in our daily lives.

Prithvi governs all the solid structures of the body, including our Bones, Muscles, Skin, Teeth, Nails and Connective tissues. A healthy Earth element provides physical strength, resilience, and the ability to recover and grow.

Our mental and emotional wellbeing is also influenced by Prithvi. When the Earth element is balanced, we often experience A sense of security and safety, Emotional stability, Patience and resilience, Confidence, Calmness during life’s challenges and A feeling of being grounded and present. When the Earth element becomes depleted, we may feel anxious, scattered, restless, or disconnected. Conversely, an excess of Earth energy can leave us feeling stuck, resistant to change, sluggish, or lacking motivation.

As with all aspects of yoga, balance is key.

Prithvi and the Root Chakra
The Earth element is closely associated with the Muladhara (Root) Chakra, located at the base of the spine. This energy centre governs our basic needs and our sense of safety, belonging, and stability. When our Root Chakra is balanced, we feel supported by life, connected to our surroundings, and confident in ourselves. Many grounding yoga practices are designed to strengthen both the Root Chakra and the Earth element together.

Grounding Through Yoga
Yoga offers many opportunities to cultivate Prithvi through steady, mindful movement.
Grounding postures include Mountain Pose (Tadasana), Tree Pose (Vrikshasana), Warrior I and II and Child’s Pose (Balasana). Rather than focusing on flexibility, these postures invite us to feel the support beneath our feet, build strength from the ground up, and develop stability from within. Moving slowly, breathing deeply, and maintaining awareness of our connection to the earth transforms these poses into powerful grounding practices.

Bringing Earth Into Everyday Life
Balancing the Earth element doesn’t stop when we roll up our yoga mat.
Simple daily practices can help us reconnect with Prithvi. Spend time in nature whenever possible. Walk barefoot on grass or sand where it is safe to do so. Create a daily routine. Eat nourishing, wholesome meals. Tend to a garden or care for houseplants. Practise mindful breathing. Allow yourself time for rest and restoration. Even taking a few moments to notice the sensation of your feet firmly planted on the ground can help restore a sense of calm.

The Wisdom of Prithvi
Life is constantly changing, but the Earth teaches us that stability comes from within. Like the mountains that stand through every season and the trees that grow stronger through deep roots, we too can cultivate resilience by building a steady foundation.

When we honour the Earth element through our yoga practice and our daily lives, we develop the confidence to face challenges with calmness, patience, and strength.

The next time you step onto your mat, take a moment to feel your feet rooted into the ground. Notice the support beneath you. Let the Earth remind you that you are held, supported, and exactly where you need to be.
