Yoga to beat the Winter Blues

Yoga to beat the winter blues

Yoga can help you deal with the winter blues.  It could be considered a little winter pick me up for anyone who might need a LIFT – whatever the weather.

With the change in season, we can begin to feel lethargic, stressed, and disturbed.  With the drop in temperature and reduced sunlight, some people start feeling a bit off. But if the sense of gloom doesn’t go away, it could be the winter blues, which is a symptom of a condition known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The winter blues are very common during this time of the year and can take a toll on your energy levels and mood.  Even the people with the brightest of personalities can lose their spark and motivation.

Winter blues or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is linked to seasonal changes, typically occurring during the winter when sunlight is reduced. Its symptoms may include low energy, mood swings, and a lack of interest in activities.

Since yoga offers a holistic approach, it can help manage winter blues by reducing stress levels, improving mood, and promoting physical activity.  Winter provides an opportunity to turn inward and cultivate inner peace.  Connect with your inner wisdom and find solace amidst the winter months.

During the winter months, it’s essential to stay grounded and connected to the present moment, this will allow you to become centred, and more attuned to the earth’s energy.

The flowing sequence of poses, synchronised with conscious breathing, helps increase blood circulation and boost energy levels. Poses will stimulate the nervous system, promote a sense of positivity, open the heart, release tension, and enhance mood.

Where the head is below the heart, can invigorate the body and mind, promoting mental clarity, improve circulation, and uplift the spirits.

This month’s sequence will bring a consciousness back to the body – a little check in to raise your spirit and bring wellness during this cold season.  Leave what does not serve you on the mat! Get curious, go inward, be mindful, remember your sense of humour and have some fun.
