Leaving behind what no longer serves us

Warrior 2 pose

This is one of the best themes to start a New Year with. It could hold new power as we begin a new year and a new set of yoga classes.

Become more mindful of the postures which are being practiced and recognizing which ones are serving your body best in that moment.  Explore going inside with this sentiment, meditate on the things from the last year that held you back or created obstacles in your life and release those things with their breath. With each exhale, releasing that which no longer serves you and creating space for new things to enter their life.

Don’t be afraid to let go of things that no longer serve you.

Think about all of the negative thoughts that have been rolling around in your head, all of the negative situations you have been going through recently, the toxic people who have shown up in your life. You are in the driver seat of your life. If someone or something isn’t making you happy, it’s perfectly okay to let it go to make room for the thoughts, situations and people you do want in your life.

Each time you come to your mat, you have the opportunity to spring clean your soul and give away all of the stuff you don’t need anymore. Only instead of doing a trip like this once or twice a year, you get to get rid of what no longer serves you, every time you step onto the mat.

Give yourself permission to let go of the stuff you no longer need without feeling guilty about it. Make room for the good stuff – the positive thoughts, the positive feelings, positive opportunities, positive people and of course more yoga.

This experience is one of those really powerful “ah-ha” moments, thanks to yoga. It’s an incredible life changer. All the really good stuff happens in yoga.
