Agni – Fire

The Fire element

In yoga the fire element is also known as Teja or Agni.

It is characterised as

  • hot,
  • sharp,
  • dry,
  • subtle,

Wherever there is movement there is friction and this leads to the formation of fire or heat: the rubbing of two sticks together creates fire; the continual movement of the body in yoga poses using the breath (vinyasa) creates heat.

All the various forms of transformation including digestion of food are carried out by the fire element.

The various functions carried out by this element are

  • penetration,
  • digestion of food,
  • transformation of thoughts,

The sense associated with the fire element is vision because of the perception of light being carried out by this sense.
